The Civil Guard (Guardia Civil) was a prominent military-style police force during the Spanish Civil War conflict. At the outbreak of the war, the corps spilt: approximately 30,000 officers remained loyal to the Republican government, with around 42,000 defecting to Francisco Franco’s Nationalist forces.
